Practice Areas

State Criminal Law

District Court

If you are charged in Wake County, or any county court in the eastern part of North Carolina, for traffic matters (speeding, DWI, DWLR) or other misdemeanors, such as drug offenses, assaults, domestic violence, etc., I can assist you.

Superior Court

If you have been indicted in Superior Court for felony offenses (these are: major drug offenses, robbery, assaults, rape, murders, etc.) I can assist you.  If you require a bond reduction hearing, please feel free to contact my office.

Federal Criminal Law

I am an experienced trial attorney in federal district court, and am admitted to practice in the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina.

There have been significant changes in the law in recent months affecting federal criminal sentencing.

Be aware, because sentencing in federal court includes relevant conduct with a lower burden of proof, you are wisely advised not to waive any constitutional protections in any plea agreements, including waivers like Blakeley waivers, Simmons waivers, or Appeal waivers, without carefully considering the proffered benefits.  Moreover, if you have a drug case, trying the case to a jury to prove the drugs attributed to you and make a record is crucial, until and unless your exposure is properly limited.  Deb can advise you how.

If you need assistance in taking your case to a jury trial, limiting exposure or determining whether you qualify for sentencing relief, contact my office for a consultation.

Federal Appeal

I am a CJA attorney for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. As such, I routinely review matters on appeal from the Eastern District of North Carolina on behalf of indigent defendants.

If you have a case in federal court, and have or wish to appeal the sentence or the entire proceeding, contact my office for a consultation.

State and Federal Drug Trafficking

State and federal drug trafficking cases are handled very differently as it relates to sentencing.

Moreover, there have been numerous changes in the law in recent months affecting sentencing in drug cases.

Call me for a consultation.

If you or your family member are in pretrial detention, or are facing an imminent detention hearing in federal court, contact me at 919-931-2294 for a prompt response.

Family Law

On a case-by-case basis, I may be able to assist you when you need to end your marriage.  If you are in a toxic marriage, and need to seek peace without subjecting yourself and your family to emotional and financial devastation, or are staying because you are afraid of subjecting your kids to living with the anger of your spouse, perhaps we can help. My experts and I can walk you and your family through this process and help you embrace a better life.

Lawyers are supposed to help you, not to make an already emotionally charged situation worse.  Lawyers understand that people fall in love, they fall out of love, and foremost they love their kids. Problems simply do not go away; maybe together we can face them. Working together you can have a better life.

Lawyers should also help you work through your financial situation without devastating the family resources, and some do.  You can have a life of peace, happiness, financial certainty and family, love and support, and be a better, more wonderful father or mother.  You do not have to sacrifice your health and happiness to protect your kids.  They deserve better; they deserve to have you happy and respectful to each other as their parents.

You used to like the person you are married to.  As friends, you can both take responsibility for your health and happiness, work together to arrange your family so that everyone benefits from your decisions, and secure the emotional and financial benefits of the family within a compassionate divorce.  If you need this type of assistance, perhaps we can help you.

My experts and I are available to assist when you are ready to have your life back.

Traffic Court

When you contact me for your traffic matters in state court, I will need:

1.  Your ticket; and

2.  Your driving record.

Typically I am able to allow you to WAIVE personal appearance at your traffic court case hearing, unless your case is a non-waivable offense.  In this way, I go to court and you can get on with your day.
